Former Tottenham Hotspur skipper Campbell has carved a deserved reputation as one of England's most commanding centre-halves, boasting impeccable tackling skills and huge strength on the ball.

Campbell sensationally left Spurs in the summer of 2001 to join deadly rivals Arsenal on a Bosman free transfer.

The move provoked death threats from some irate Tottenham fans and led the media to question his motives when he pulled out of the England squad for a friendly against Holland at White Hart Lane - Spurs' home ground.

He had played 315 games for Spurs in an eight-year association.

Campbell started slowly with Arsenal, but as the season progressed Campbell grew in stature and regained the form which had won him plaudits in the past - picking up a Championship and FA Cup winners' medal in his first season with the Gunners.
